THE $4.88 MILLION MUDKIP GOT THE HEADLINES. THE $384,300 TEAM ROCKET RETURNS BOOSTER BOX IS THE RECORD YOU CAN USE
TL;DR: Goldin’s record Pokemon card auction closed October 25, 2026, and a factory sealed Team Rocket Returns booster box sold for $384,300 with buyer’s premium. The same box sold for $82,500 on eBay in September 2025. My call: HOLD out of print ex era sealed, buy only authenticated sealed, and AVOID chasing trophy promos. Data as of November 3, 2026.
The Numbers From Goldin’s Record Night
- Goldin 2026 Pokemon 30th Anniversary auction, closed October 25, 2026: over $28 million in sales and 18 records, prices with buyer’s premium, per Goldin’s results reported October 29, 2026.
- 2015 Japanese XY Promo Art Academy Mudkip, PSA 10: $4.88 million. 1997 Japanese Gold 1st Place Trophy Pikachu, PSA 8: over $3 million. Art Academy Sableye and Gourgeist, PSA 10: $976,000 each.
- 2004 EX Team Rocket Returns booster box, factory sealed, 36 packs, X-Ray Authority letter: $384,300 at Goldin, October 25, 2026.
- Same box, earlier sales: $31,200 at Fanatics Collect on May 5, 2023, then $26,200 (January 28, 2024), $52,808 (June 16, 2025) and $82,500 (September 17, 2025) on eBay, per PriceCharting.
- Modern box today: Phantasmal Flames Booster Box, 36 packs, listed at $160.99 at Best Buy on November 3, 2026.
The Pokemon card auction record everybody is talking about is a $4.88 million Mudkip. Goldin closed its 2026 Pokemon 30th Anniversary auction on October 25, 2026 with over $28 million in sales and 18 records. A PSA 10 Japanese Art Academy Mudkip led it, and a PSA 8 1997 Gold Trophy Pikachu went for over $3 million.
I am not looking at either one. The sale I care about happened a few lots away. A factory sealed EX Team Rocket Returns booster box from 2004 sold for $384,300, buyer’s premium included. That is the record a collector can actually do something with.
Sealed over singles. Out of print sealed is the buy. That has been our position for a long time, and this auction is the loudest proof of it yet… a box of 36 packs that sat on store shelves in 2004 just sold for more than 3,000 times its pack price.

Who Signed Off on a $384,300 Box
This is the first question I ask on any old box, and it should be yours too. Fakes and reseals are the biggest risk in vintage sealed. A Team Rocket Returns box that showed up at auction was flagged as fake on a collector forum in January 2024. So a price like this means nothing until you know who checked the wrap.
Goldin’s own lot title answers it. The box sold with a letter of authenticity from X-Ray Authority. It is not graded by PSA or anyone else. It is a raw sealed box with a lab’s letter.
X-Ray Authority is the trade name of Industrial Inspection and Consulting, a lab in Norton Shores, Michigan. It scans sealed product with x-ray and CT imaging and never opens it. Its own price list puts a public booster box check at $300, with a report, a serial number and an entry in a public registry. The same lab scanned a 2006 EX Holon Phantoms box in January 2025 that had sold for as much as $26,000 the year before, and found it fake.
That letter is part of what the winning bidder paid for. Three hundred dollars of scanning sits under a $384,300 result. If you own old sealed, that is the cheapest insurance in the hobby.
The Team Rocket Returns Booster Box Tape Nobody Printed
Every story on this auction ran the Mudkip. None of them ran the box’s history, so here it is. A sealed English box sold for $31,200 on Fanatics Collect on May 5, 2023, with buyer’s premium and no authenticator named. Then it sold on eBay for $26,200 on January 28, 2024, $52,808 on June 16, 2025 and $82,500 on September 17, 2025, per PriceCharting.
Goldin’s $384,300 is 4.7 times that last eBay sale, 13 months later. It is 12.3 times the 2023 Fanatics Collect sale. PriceCharting still read $67,654.00 for an ungraded box on November 3, 2026, because its number is built on those eBay sales.
So which price is real? Both are. A box with a lab letter, sold at a major house during a record week, is a different product from a box on eBay with no paperwork. I would not pay $384,300 for an unchecked Team Rocket Returns booster box, and nobody else should either.
What Is Inside That Box
Collectors pay for the chance at the three Gold Star cards: Torchic, Treecko and Mudkip. Team Rocket Returns launched on November 8, 2004, and it was the set that brought Gold Stars to English Pokemon. The Mudkip Gold Star 107/109 in PSA 10 sold for $610,000 in this same auction, per results reported after the sale.

That is why a sealed box carries so much. Nobody knows what is in it, and that mystery is the asset. The day it is opened, it becomes 36 packs of mostly common cards and a lottery ticket.
Is the Goldin Pokemon auction record a reason to buy sealed now?
Yes, but only authenticated sealed, and only out of print. As of October 25, 2026, the two other ex era boxes in the sale had X-Ray Authority letters too, per Goldin’s lot titles. An EX Deoxys box was reported at $378,267 and an EX Unseen Forces box at $183,001.
The EX Unseen Forces box sold for $13,000 on eBay on December 20, 2021 and $121,506 on March 19, 2026, per PriceCharting. That is the same jump the Team Rocket Returns box made: a lab letter and a major house took it well above its last open market sale. The EX Deoxys box, sold with a shot at Gold Star Rayquaza, Latias and Latios, landed within $6,033 of it.
Here is the math nobody wants to do. Team Rocket Returns packs launched at $3.29 each, so 36 packs cost $118.44 at pack price in 2004. The Goldin result is 3,245 times that, about 44.5 percent a year compounded for 22 years. Do not expect a modern box to do that. The point is that out of print sealed held long enough is where the biggest money in this hobby has been made.
What a Modern Box Would Have to Do
Take a box you can buy today. Best Buy listed the Phantasmal Flames Booster Box at $160.99 on November 3, 2026, on its product page. To hit $384,300 in 22 years, it would need about 42.4 percent a year, every year. At 10 percent a year it ends near $1,310. At 15 percent, about $3,485.
That is the honest version. A modern box bought at MSRP is not a $384,300 box. It can still be a GREAT hold, and the Phantasmal Flames box already read $389.72 on TCGplayer’s Market on October 30, 2026, about 2.4 times the Best Buy price. Buy at MSRP, store it well, and let time do the work.
I laid out how I split my own money in why sealed beats singles, and this auction does not change it. If anything it makes the sealed side look better.
The Trophy Cards Are Color, Not a Buy
The Art Academy Mudkip is one of three PSA 10 copies. The Gold Trophy Pikachu was a tournament prize. Nobody reading this can buy one, and one auction does not make a market for the next copy. I am not making a buy call on them and I would stay away from anything sold off the back of these headlines.
Sealed is different. Team Rocket Returns was a retail set, sold by the box and the pack in 2004, and sealed product from that era still turns up for sale. That is the record you can act on.
How I Would Get In on Ex Era Sealed
Most of us are not buying a whole box. The entry is a single pack. An EX Team Rocket Returns pack reads $2,127.17 ungraded on PriceCharting as of November 3, 2026, and raw packs sold on eBay for $1,825.00 to $2,500.00 from July 13 to September 27, 2026, per PriceCharting. A PSA 8 Mewtwo art pack sold for $4,050.00 on October 27.
Old single packs can be weighed or searched, so I want them graded by PSA or bought from a seller who will stand behind them. On a full box I want a third party letter in hand before I bid. If you already own ex era sealed, keep it sealed. I fully expect the next authenticated Team Rocket Returns booster box to land well above the old eBay prices, so I would not sell into them now.
Would you rather own the $384,300 sealed box or the $4.88 million Mudkip? Tell me in the comments which one you think holds its price better over the next 10 years.

I Am Holding Out of Print Sealed and Skipping the Trophy Cards Until a Checked Box Sells Under $192,150
My call is HOLD on out of print ex era sealed you already own, and buy only sealed that comes with a third party letter or a PSA grade. AVOID chasing the trophy and Art Academy promos on one auction result. This is a 5 year plus view, and the risk is plain: $384,300 is one authenticated box in a record week, and the open market tape sits far lower.
If an authenticated EX Team Rocket Returns box sells under $192,150 at a major auction house, half the October 25 price, I will re-check the HOLD. Until then I am keeping my sealed sealed. I will post the next big sealed result on our Facebook page.
