Pokémon Legends: Z-A Shakes Up the TCG Market—What Collectors Should Know

The release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A has invigorated the trading card market, selling 5.8 million copies in its first week. Key opportunities arise from new Mega Evolutions, particularly for older cards like Mega Charizard and Mega Feraligatr. Attention should also focus on Zygarde and unconventional starters, with upcoming TCG sets anticipated.

The release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A has sent ripples through the trading card market, and for good reason. With 5.8 million copies sold in its first week and a spotlight on Mega Evolution, collectors are scrambling to figure out which cards will benefit from the renewed interest.

Here’s what you need to know before making your next buy.

Mega Evolution Takes Center Stage

The biggest takeaway for card collectors is obvious: Mega Evolution is back in a major way. Z-A introduces 26 brand-new Mega Evolutions, including Mega Greninja, Mega Dragonite, Mega Feraligatr, and Mega Zygarde. That’s a significant expansion to the Mega roster, and the TCG will almost certainly follow suit with new cards featuring these forms.

If you’re looking to get ahead of the curve, older Mega Evolution cards from the XY era deserve a second look. Mega Charizard, Mega Lucario, and Mega Gengar EX cards have already seen modest price bumps since the game’s announcement. The smart play is grabbing these before a potential Z-A-themed TCG set drops and drives demand even higher.

Starter Pokémon Worth Watching

Z-A breaks tradition with its starter lineup: Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig. This unusual combination has pushed attention toward Johto and Unova starters in the card market.

Feraligatr cards are particularly interesting right now. The Pokémon is getting its first-ever Mega Evolution in Z-A, which means we’ll likely see a Mega Feraligatr card at some point. Vintage Feraligatr holos from the Neo Genesis era have crept upward in price, and even modern versions are worth holding onto.

The same logic applies to Meganium and Emboar—both receiving Mega forms for the first time. These aren’t chase cards by any means, but they’re low-risk pickups that could pay off when the TCG inevitably celebrates Z-A’s new Megas.

Zygarde Is the Legendary to Watch

Zygarde plays a central narrative role in Z-A, and the game introduces Mega Zygarde. This legendary has been somewhat overlooked in the TCG compared to other cover legendaries, which actually makes it an interesting opportunity.

Zygarde GX and Zygarde Complete Forme cards from the Sun & Moon era are still reasonably affordable. If The Pokémon Company pushes Zygarde hard in upcoming sets—which seems likely given its prominence in the game—these could become sought-after pieces.

The DLC Factor

The Mega Dimension DLC launched in December and added roughly 138 returning Pokémon, along with new mechanics like Z Mega Evolution. Mega Lucario Z is the first Pokémon to feature this enhanced form, which could translate into a new card mechanic down the line.

The DLC also introduced Mega Raichu in two forms (X and Y), Mega Baxcalibur, and Mega Golisopod. These are all fresh additions that didn’t exist in the TCG before Z-A. When new cards featuring these Pokémon eventually hit the market, early printings will likely carry premium prices.

What About Charizard?

Of course, Charizard is involved. An Alpha Charizard Mystery Gift is currently available through January 2026, keeping the fan-favorite dragon in the conversation. Charizard cards don’t need much help holding value, but the Alpha variant and Solar Power ability featured in the game could inspire a special card treatment.

If you’re already holding Charizard cards, you’re probably fine. If you’re looking to buy, focus on Mega Charizard X and Y cards from the XY Flashfire and Evolutions sets. These directly tie into the Mega Evolution theme Z-A is pushing.

The Bigger Picture

Z-A’s 5.8 million first-week sales confirm that Pokémon remains a commercial juggernaut. More importantly, the game’s focus on a specific mechanic—Mega Evolution—gives collectors a clear roadmap for what the TCG will likely emphasize in 2026.

The card market tends to follow game releases with themed sets and promotional cards. We saw it with Legends: Arceus, and we’ll see it with Z-A. The Pokémon that matter most are the ones getting new Mega forms: Greninja, Dragonite, Hawlucha, Chandelure, and the starters mentioned above.

The Bottom Line

For collectors looking to make smart buys, the strategy is straightforward. Prioritize older Mega Evolution cards before renewed interest drives prices up. Keep an eye on Zygarde and the unconventional starters. And watch for announcements about a Z-A-themed TCG set—that’s when the real movement will happen.

The game’s divisive reception among players won’t matter much for the card market. Sales numbers speak louder than Metacritic scores, and 5.8 million copies means millions of potential collectors rediscovering their love for Mega Evolution.
