Mega Evolution—Ascended Heroes: The Latest News to be Released

The upcoming Pokemon TCG set, Ascended Heroes, releasing January 30, 2026, will feature over 290 cards, reviving Mega Evolution. Due to staggered releases and limited booster boxes, supply and pricing issues are anticipated, paralleling previous trends. Collectors should consider singles or Elite Trainer Boxes for value while waiting for market stabilization post-release.

The largest English Pokemon TCG set ever is coming January 30, 2026, and early Japanese market data suggests this could be another supply crunch similar to Prismatic Evolutions. Here’s what the numbers tell us about where to put your money.

The Set at a Glance

Ascended Heroes drops with over 290 cards, eclipsing Fusion Strike’s previous record of 284. The set ties into Pokemon Legends: Z-A and brings back Mega Evolution with 13 Mega Evolution ex cards, including several new forms never seen before in the games. Mega Dragonite ex headlines the set with its Sky Transport ability and a devastating 330-damage Ryuno Glide attack.

But here’s the catch: no traditional booster boxes. Like Prismatic Evolutions before it, this is a special set sold exclusively through specialty products spread across a four-month release window.

Japanese Market Prices: Your Crystal Ball

The Japanese equivalent, MEGA Dream ex, released November 28, 2025, and the secondary market has already spoken. Based on current Japanese retail prices:

The Mega Gengar ex Special Illustration Rare is the clear chase card, already commanding prices that rival some of Prismatic Evolutions’ top hits. That purple-flame phantom artwork has collectors scrambling.

Why Supply Will Be Tight

Prismatic Evolutions taught us what happens with special sets. Elite Trainer Boxes retailing at $50 were selling for $200–600 on the secondary market at launch. Some stores refused to carry the set entirely due to crowd control concerns.

Ascended Heroes faces similar constraints. Products release on a staggered schedule from January through April, meaning you can’t just walk into a store on launch day and grab everything you need. The four-month drip feed almost guarantees supply issues at each wave.

Product Breakdown and Value Assessment

January 30, 2026 (Wave 1)

  • Tech Sticker Collection: 3 packs, Charmander or Gastly promo — Entry-level product, good for casual collectors
  • Erika/Larry Collections: 2 packs, trainer promo — Limited pack count makes this poor value for chase hunting

February 20, 2026 (Wave 2)

  • Elite Trainer Box ($49.99 MSRP): 9 packs, N’s Zekrom Illustration Rare promo — Best pack-per-dollar ratio
  • Pokemon Center ETB: 11 packs, 2 N’s Zekrom promos (1 stamped) — Premium option if you can secure one
  • Mini Tins: 2 packs each — Collectible but low pack count

March 20, 2026 (Wave 3)

  • Premium Poster Collections ($49.99): 10 packs, Mega Lucario or Mega Gardevoir Mega Attack Rare promo — Strong value with exclusive promos

April 24, 2026 (Wave 4)

  • Booster Bundle ($26.94): 6 packs — Straightforward option for late adopters

The Smart Money Play

For collectors hunting chase cards, the math favors patience and singles. With 22 Special Illustration Rares in a 290+ card set, pull rates will be brutal. The odds of pulling a specific SIR like Mega Gengar could be worse than 1 in 200 packs.

If you want sealed product, Elite Trainer Boxes offer the best value at roughly $5.55 per pack. Pokemon Center ETBs push that down to $4.54 per pack if you catch them in stock.

For the Mega Gengar ex SIR specifically, waiting 2–3 months after release typically sees prices drop 20–40% as more product gets opened. The Japanese market already shows prices softening from initial highs.

Cards to Watch Beyond the Obvious

The N’s Zekrom promo exclusive to ETBs features Illustration Rare styling. Given ETB supply constraints, this promo could hold surprising value.

Canari, a new trainer from Pokemon Legends: Z-A, makes her TCG debut here at around $37 in Japan. The seven Mega Attack Rare cards with comic book-inspired Japanese katakana text are wildcards whose unique aesthetic could drive collector demand.

The Bottom Line

Ascended Heroes presents a familiar dilemma: high demand, restricted supply, and a release structure designed to frustrate bulk buyers. The Mega Gengar ex SIR will likely command $400+ in English, with Mega Dragonite ex Gold trailing close behind.

If you’re buying to open, secure ETBs at MSRP and manage your expectations. If you’re buying singles, wait for the market to stabilize in late February or March. And if you’re sitting this one out entirely, that’s a reasonable choice too—the secondary market will still be there when you’re ready.

The set drops January 30, 2026. Pre-orders are already moving fast at GameStop, Best Buy, and Pokemon Center.
